A lot of courses will teach you how to write in a certain style: how to sound like Palestrina, or J.S. Bach, or Hans Zimmer. Or they'll have you writing music in the style of their teacher.

This is something I really didn't want to do with this program. This program will teach you the processes and workflows of great composers, but will give you the tools and techniques needed to develop your own voice. So you won't end up sounding like me, or like the typical "Epic Music" track online. You will develop a unique voice and style which you can truly be proud of. 

If you visit my Case Studies page, you'll hear that the musical examples there are all in completely different styles. I encouraged the students to follow their own excitement, rather than copying me - and the results speak for themselves. These students developed in their personal direction, rather than learning to be another Hans Zimmer clone. 

You can compose music using a pencil and paper, or on your computer using notation software, or a DAW. I run through these different options in my Tech Quick-Start Guide, so you'll know exactly where to start with the course.

A keyboard can definitely be helpful for composing, but is not essential. 

Bernstein was a terrible singer! But you can bet he could hear the notes in his head. You might not have the best voice - but I encourage you to sing the “singing exercises” anyway. As long as you can hear what note it’s supposed to be, even if your voice can’t perfectly replicate that, then you’re doing the exercise. Singing the exercises forces you to use your brain – it’s not just a matter of “pushing buttons” to find the right note. You actually have to think about the relationship between each note on the page, and then reproduce that with your body. In that sense, singing makes the learning process concrete - it turns what you hear in your head, into some kind of reality, and so it’s a powerful tool.

Having said that, if you’re truly dreadful at singing, then that’s okay! We all have different bodies. And so I’ve created alternative ways of completing the exercises, which still use your brain but don’t involve you making sound.
